Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is likely to witness widespread rainfall over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain at isolated places on July 27 and 28.
According to the IMD, the state is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall from July 27 to July 31, while isolated areas may experience heavy showers during the period.The weather conditions are being influenced by a deep depression over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, which intensified from a depression and is expected to make landfall between Balasore and Canning along the West Bengal–north Odisha coast on Monday afternoon. An upper air cyclonic circulation also persists over the east-central Arabian Sea and the adjoining Konkan coast, contributing to the rainfall activity over Kerala.
Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging and landslides. Residents are urged to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to exercise caution while travelling during periods of intense rainfall.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a warning for rough sea conditions across several parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.Strong winds with speeds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely over the central and southwestern Arabian Sea, the adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, the Somalia and Oman coasts, the southern Bay of Bengal, and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast.
Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected over the south Maharashtra and Goa coast, the adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, the Andaman Sea, the Myanmar coast, and parts of the central Bay of Bengal.
The strongest winds are forecast over the West Bengal and Odisha coasts and the northwestern Bay of Bengal, where speeds may reach 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Similar conditions are also likely along the north Andhra Pradesh coast, the Bangladesh coast, and adjoining parts of the northern Bay of Bengal.Fishermen and those planning to venture into the sea have been advised to exercise extreme caution and follow the latest advisories issued by the meteorological department.
